Planting & Gardens · Christchurch

Gardens that belong to the site

Earthly creates planting with structure, seasonal movement and the resilience to settle into Christchurch conditions — chosen for the site it’s going into, not off a standard list.

The approach

Planting is part of the architecture

Good planting gives a space enclosure, softness, rhythm and change through the year. It’s a design discipline, not a finishing touch — species chosen for the site, the character you’re after and the care that’s realistic to give it.

A garden planted this way reads as considered on day one and better every season after.

01

Structure — the evergreen bones that hold the garden together all year.

02

Seasonal movement — colour, texture and flowering that shift across the year.

03

Right for the site — species matched to sun, wind, soil and how exposed the spot is.

04

Realistic care — planting pitched to the time you’ll actually give it.

05

Room to mature — spaced and chosen for the garden it becomes, not just planting day.

What's included

From concept to established garden

A planting project can take in as much of this as the garden needs.

Garden & planting concept

The character, structure and feeling of the garden, worked out before a single plant is bought.

Plant palettes & plans

Detailed planting plans and species palettes, so the garden is designed rather than assembled.

Soil & establishment prep

The ground built up properly, because good soil is what decides whether planting thrives.

Sourcing & installation

Plants sourced well and set out on site with the mature garden in mind.

Lawns & irrigation

Lawns and irrigation coordination where they’re part of the picture, with establishment guidance.

Ongoing care

Care after planting so the garden keeps to its design as it settles, grows and changes.

The planting process

From conditions to character

01

Read the site

Light, wind, soil, water, existing vegetation, the architecture and the outlook.

02

Define the feeling

Structure, palette, density, the seasonal moments and a level of care that’s realistic.

03

Prepare & plant

Build the soil, source well and set plants out with the mature garden already in mind.

04

Establish

Clear early-care guidance, and ongoing support where you want Earthly to stay involved.

The long view

Chosen for how it will grow in ,
not how it looks on the truck.

A garden isn’t finished on planting day, it’s barely started. Earthly plants for the version of the garden that arrives in a few years, and helps it get there.

Looking after the design

Care that keeps the garden true to plan

Earthly maintains gardens after planting so the original design stays visible as the landscape settles, grows and changes. It’s the last part of an end-to-end model — the same team, still responsible for the outcome.

Care is a natural fit for gardens Earthly designed or built. Scope, frequency and availability are confirmed with Sam.
